Best to get this out the way before I start; every now and then I feel compelled to write something that is bugging me in one way or another. Sometimes, its about society while others its something deep; this one’s a little deep I’m afraid so feel free to move along if you wish….completely understand 🙂
Having had a prolonged period of downtime from work during Christmas (still been dealing with things as they have come in but I’ve been working from home), my mind started to wander as it does when it has some freedom. Anyway, something came on TV about “darkness” so off the mind wandered….here’s some of the thoughts that happened.
Darkness is typically resolved by turning on a light, but that isn’t darkness….that’s dark. I believe that darkness is a loss of hope, a total inability to see beyond a current situation. That darkness can take any form depending on a persons circumstance. For somebody who finds themselves homeless with no means of getting back into “normal” society, then this is their darkness as they can see no way of getting out of their situation. Another person may find that they loose their “faith”, for someone who has a deep belief in a religion this is devastating and they find themselves lost with nothing to believe in. A person suffering from mental health issues, a prominent topic at the moment, then their darkness appears each and every minute as there is no light in their life. Things that should bring pleasure and happiness end up feeling hollow and hopeless. Darkness means something different to each and every person. This year has seen many tragedies here in the UK; with the Manchester bombing, terror attacks in London, Grenfell Tower fire this year has left many with the loss of loved ones and left with their own darkness.
I believe the only way to overcome darkness is hope. From hope anything is possible but you have to believe it 100% without compromise. As Alexander Pope once wrote:
Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never is, but always to be blessed:
The soul, uneasy and confined from home,
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.
Finding hope is not always easy, I know from experience, but it is there; its in the faces of friends and family, its in the air we breathe, its in the faces of strangers we pass in the street. Hope will always be there, you just have to find it.
As this year comes to a close, now is a good time to reflect on the year behind us. Find the good things that happened through the year. It may not be easy, it may take a lot of thought but they are there so look hard.
One of the things I love most about New Year is love. Its been many years since I have been out and partied the New Year in but the one thing I remember is it was always the best night out. Everyone was out for a good time, no hassle, just love and friendship. For that one night of the year there was just love, everybody loved everybody else, from me it was truly the best night out each year….most of all it was filled with hope. Hope that the next year held so much promise of a better one than last year.
Mankind is amazing, we can find hope. If you can’t find hope yourself then ask a friend to help and when you find it hold on to it and hold on tight, don’t let go for anyone. When you find yours, spread it…don’t keep it to yourself, share with others, spread it far and wide. Its embedded deep in human nature to help others, when you do I guarantee you will feel amazing.
However you planned it, see in the New Year in your own way and spread love and hope as you go!
If you made it all the way to the end of this post then you’re either have nothing better to do or you found this a good read! Well done on making it to the end……Happy New Year!!
